Attractions

Some of these places are touristy, some not so much, but you’re sure to find an activity you like. (These activities are more tailored to the fall season; many of Edmonton’s attractions are seasonal thanks to our extreme weather.)

The River Valley — At 7,400 hectares, Edmonton’s North Saskatchewan River valley is the largest stretch of urban parkland in North America. There are 22 major parks and over 150 kilometres of trails. Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market — Every Saturday just a couple blocks from the Sugar Foot Ballroom is Edmonton’s most popular farmer’s market. Each week they have around 130 vendors selling only locally produced, handmade products. The market is home to Toast Kitchen, a delectable concession and cafe with food items made from the market and locally-sourced seasonal ingredients. Market goes from 8AM – 3PM. http://osfm.ca

Fort Edmonton Park — Fort Edmonton Park is a historical “village” nestled in a large wooded park in the middle of the city. Wander the streets and check out preserved buildings that depict the evolution of Edmonton’s early history. Sugar Swing’s dancers are frequently brought in to perform at festivals and events. Check the website for hours because they change month-to-month, depending on the weather. https://www.fortedmontonpark.ca

SNAP Gallery — The Society of Northern Alberta Print-artists (SNAP) aims to make you fall in love with printmaking.  This gallery is free to visit (though they happily accept donations) and focuses solely on print production.  If you’re one to get excited about fonts and squeal over letterpress designs, this place is a must-see. http://www.snapartists.com

Muttart Conservatory — Glass pyramids house a staggering variety of plant life from different biomes. During October the Muttart hosts an international sculpture exhibit from Zimbabwe. http://www.edmonton.ca/attractions_events/muttart-conservatory.aspx

Art Gallery of Alberta — Our premiere art gallery is housed in a gorgeous building and features ever-changing and compelling exhibits. This October you can see Presto Lumo, and exhibit about optical trickery and illusion! http://www.youraga.ca

Telus World of Science — A science centre featuring an IMAX theatre, a planetarium, and an observatory. This season’s exhibits: robots and dinosaurs! http://telusworldofscienceedmonton.ca

West Edmonton Mall — A sprawling monument to shopping that includes an ice rink, amusement park, and waterpark. Locals don’t really hang here, but if you’re keen on shopping you’ll find everything you can fathom at this mall. The waterpark is truly awesome.  http://www.wem.ca
